cookie monster

Last Friday, Travis and I baked biscuits. Dylan and I used to bake often and I'm not sure why it took me so long to get started with Travis... we had loads of fun and they turned out very tasty! He asked me every night, for a week, if we were going to bake biscuits again tomorrow.

the last of the ice

On Sunday morning we raced out to enjoy what might possibly be the last of the ice this winter. This time around Travis also wanted to try out the skates. He had more fun falling down than actually skating though.
you just have to laugh with him!
he did manage to stay on his feet for a few minutes
Dylan was getting along quite nicely
 free ride

No skating for me but I did get out on the ice! I still find it all quite amazing. The only ice skating I did when growing up was on an indoor ice-rink (with disco lights and music) on the top floor of the Carlton Centre in Joburg, if I remember correctly... this is a much better way of doing it! People skating on lakes and rivers and canals and children going to school by sled. It all adds a little bit of magic to winter.

5th birthday party

Dylan was very excited about his 5th birthday party. We had it on Saturday, the day before he turned 5. He invited his friends, 4 boys from his class: Alex, Benk, Jan and Niels. He was busy planning it for months and I think he enjoyed every minute of it.
the invitation
They opened the presents at the beginning. I say 'they' because I turned my back for 2 seconds to get the camera and when I turned back, all the boys were opening their own presents. They all very proudly showed Dylan what a great present he had got from each of them!!! He was sitting looking very surprised at the whole thing. Luckily he could laugh at the craziness of it all and there was one present that hadn't been opened yet so he got to open that. He did love all his presents though!
we played lots and lots of games

made (and ate) race car biscuits
and ate birthday cakes!
Dylan's favourite part of his party however was the train-sled outside. Marko tied 3 sleds together and took the boys off to play in the snow and on the lake.
off they go...
down the hill
watch out Dylan!
time to head back
lets see how strong we are...

Then it really was time to come inside. The boys played a little more and ate sweets while the parents came in for a cup of coffee. A lovely end to a great party.
Thanks boys!

cold front

On 5 February it was officially declared a cold wave (as opposed to heat wave, koudegolf!) in Holland. 10 days in a row below 0, and 3 nights in a row below -10. It hasn't been this cold, for this long, since 1997. Pretty chilly...
Here we are standing on the the Kralingseplas. This is where we swim in the summer!
Definitely time to strap on the ice skates. Dylan on skates for the first time.

snow!

It's been below freezing for ages and after about a week of it, it finally snowed! Reason enough for Travis and I to walk to fetch Dylan from school Friday afternoon. The 15 minute walk home took us an hour... loads of fun!
Brrrrrrrrrrrr!
 Dylan?
 a snow dance
 follow the leader
 look, my footprints!
 and of course,
 snowballs
 thrown at Mamaaaaaaaa!
