(no) sleep

We're in Johannesburg visiting granny and grandpa and enjoying the sun. We decided to let Dylan sleep in a big bed, mainly because the baby cot is a bit too small for him. He really enjoys this new 'freedom' cos after putting him to bed, he keeps getting out and happily comes back to the living room. Making him go to sleep takes long and requires mom or dad to be on the bed with him to convince him sleep isn't a bad thing for little boys...

One advantage of his room is that the doorhandle is just too high for him, so he can't get out of his room when the door is closed. Today, for his afternoon nap, he was 'locked in' and he was banging the door and generally being unhappy for over an hour, before he finally went to sleep. This is how we found him:

climbing is fun!

Dylan loves to climb... The only problem I have with taking him to play is that he generally expects me to join in. Luckily I was the one with the camera!Ok, I admit, he had a little help getting to the top!

muffins

On Saturday we decided to bake muffins while we waited for the rain to stop.

1. get the baking tray ready
2. mix, mix
3. put the mixture into the tray and top with banana
4. lick the spoon!

schoolboy

Dylan finally seems to have settled down in the toddler group at school - at least he is no longer as shy as he was, we were told he is now quite naughty. Most importantly, he loves going, especially now the weather seems to have improved and he can play outdoors half the day. When he has dinner in the evening we discuss his day and he tells us what he did, ate and who he played with. He also seems to learn a new song every week so we generally get treated to that too. The photos aren't from school, I just thought the short hair and the tie made him look like a naughty schoolboy.

Unfortunatey this week brought more rain so we haven't been out much today...here he is drawing a car. (?)

DIY

Dylan loves 'helping' with everything, carrying the groceries up the stairs and unpacking them, loading and unloading the dishwasher, folding the washing, cleaning up, etc. His latest favourite is helping papa timmeren en 'schroevendraaieren' - not sure that's actually a word but it's what they call it.

Grumpa!

Well, we seemed to have progressed from Butta to Grumpa, just in time for Grandpa's birthday! Here's Dylan celebrating with a red balloon. He has been practicing singing happy birthday all morning, waiting to skype.

And here he is making a surprise for Grumpa...

Travel

We're back from a lovely weekend in London, staying with Martin, Faye and Nicholas. We travelled by trains, planes and automobiles (great title for a movie!), we went by bus and metro but the thing Dylan maybe loved most was Nicholas' little bike. He didn't really cycle, but he did race around on it.... here he is going down some stairs in Bishop's park in Fulham.

PS: woohoo! first ever video on Dylan's blog

nutella!

Sometimes a bib is really necessary... this time a balaclava may have been better.

van mij!! (mine!!)

Dylan has got very possesive and can often be found hugging something to his chest saying mine, mine, mine! Here he is with 'my' rugby ball, ' not yours mama'.
My best happens after swimming. While I'm getting dressed, he gets a juice and a biscuit. He glares at whoever is nearest him and proclaims 'van mij, niet van jou!' (mine, not yours!) until he gets their attention, then he repeats it again, louder. He doesn't take his (evil) eye off the poor child until he is finished.

plu-pla kaartjes

When you spend 10 euros on groceries at our local supermarket (Albert Heijn) you get a pack of 5 football cards, the idea being to collect all of them and fill the book for this season's teams. We call them voetbal kaartjes (football cards), Dylan calls them plu-pla kaartjes or plakplaatjes (stickers). He unashamedly begs for them everytime we get to the cashier and he generally gets away with 3 packs or so which is certainly helping along his (ok, Marko's) collection!

don't ask

And then one day Dylan decided to balance Schaapie on his head...
...mission accomplished!

happy birthday to yooooooou!

Dylan was totally spoilt on his second birthday, the party lasted for 3 days! He loved every second of opening presents, singing happy birthday, playing with everyone who visited and of course, eating cake, biscuits, cake and more biscuits! (more photos in the 3 blogs below...) The little monkey now weighs 12.4kgs and is 88cm tall!

To add to the fun, Martin, Faye and Nicholas came to stay for the weekend. Pity we don't get to see them more often.

party, party, party!

The party was on Saturday afternoon. Dylan, Nicholas, Joost, Manon and Lisa had heaps of fun, along with Rosalie, Rodney and the rest of our family and friends who could make it.

pre-party

Sven couldn't make it to the party so he came to play on Friday afternoon. It was great fun watching the boys run around like crazy but I must confess that I am quite relieved I didn't have triplets!
